Rules & Regulations

  • All animals shown at fairs, shows, or exhibitions must be in proper physical condition and are subject to examination by federal or state animal-health officials before unloading and during exhibition for visual signs of infectious or contagious disease or other conditions that would make the animal unfit for exhibition. Animals showing signs of illness may be refused entry.

  • All swine must have official permanent identification. Ear notches, RFID tags, or metal tags are recommended.

  • Ownership or management deadline for swine is June 1. Market animals must be owned by the 4-H member. Breeding swine may be owned or managed. Proof of ownership or management must be available if requested by show officials.

  • Out-of-state swine must comply with all Rhode Island DEM import and exhibition requirements. Exhibitors bringing swine from outside Rhode Island should verify current identification, certificate, and testing requirements well in advance.

  • For exhibition swine 6 months of age or older, additional state testing requirements may apply depending on the state of origin.

  • Because there is no USDA-licensed rabies vaccine for swine, swine must be managed in a way that prevents direct contact between the animals and the public unless otherwise permitted under current state requirements.

  • Classes may include both purebred and grade swine. Classes will be divided by weight. Gilts may be shown in either or both breeding and market classes. No boars are permitted.

  • Show clothes are blue or black jeans with a polo shirt, tee shirt, or plaid shirt. Clothing must be neat and clean. Proper footwear is required.

  • Department-specific NRI 4-H Fair requirements, deadlines, check-in details, and updates posted on this page are supplemental to official 4-H requirements. Official state regulations take precedence in the event of a conflict.
